FURIES to be Unleashed on ART Santa Fe: Project space to feature eight women artists

SANTA FE – Snakes writhed through their hair. Their eyes dripped blood. They flew through the air wearing black robes, and sometimes wings, or the heads of dogs. No one who had committed acts of evil could escape them. Nor could anyone mistake them.

These were the Furies of Roman mythology, the Erinyes of Greek mythology – three female goddesses of justice who avenged the righteous and punished criminals, especially those who had committed acts of familial violence. The Furies were powers to be reckoned with, effectively serving as the conscience of those tempted to mortal sin.

Looked at from another perspective, the Furies were powerful women of integrity, completely dedicated to their sometimes unpleasant work, who were generally unappreciated by the masses. In other words, they got a bad rap.

These avengers of justice are the namesake of a project space exhibition at the international annual art fair, ART Santa Fe, to be held this year at El Museo Cultural July 11-13. FURIES is curated by Hollis Walker. The project is sponsored by the nonprofit Center for Contemporary Arts.

The exhibit will include work by Beverley Ashe, Mary Bennett, Stacy Brown, Victoria Carlson, Susan Herdman, Sarah Hutt, Shirley Klinghoffer and Kim Russo.

"FURIES provides a venue for eight women artists whose work doesn’t fit any `feminine ideal’ but is more appropriately described as angry, humorous, crazy, feminist, ironic, violent, sexy, political, accusatory, intellectual, vengeful or psychological,’’ Walker said, " and, perhaps, feminine."

The Bataan Arts Complex—home of CCA, Bataan Memorial Military Museum, Santa Fe Children’s Museum, and Santa Fe Performing Arts—will host the Tuesday Farmers Market. Beginning May 13, the Tuesday Market will be located at the Arts Complex until the market moves into its permanent, brand new home in the Railyard Arts District. CCA’s Interim Executive Director Sandy Thompson, who helped negotiate the deal with the Farmers Market, said, “It’s great to be available to the community…. All of us here welcome the Market’s presence on the campus.” As the Market approaches its 40th anniversary, and CCA its 30th, CCA is pleased to share its space and to practice community with vendors and clients of the Farmers Market.

Dr. Nick Karras (his degree, from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, is in Sexology) has been photographing women’s vulvae as part of an ongoing project aimed at altering women’s views of their own genitalia as anything but beautiful. Karras released a book, titled Petals, in which sepia-toned photographs depict the range of attractiveness of this most intimate—and mythically powerful—part of a woman’s body.

Not only will many of these close-up images be exhibited, the Petals documentary will be screened, examining the journey of self-discovery and empowerment experienced by the women Karras photographed.

“Petals visually explores the primal source of sexual magic” – Linda E. Savage, Ph.D.
