Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky's final masterpiece, profoundly moving, and made as he faced death by cancer,  offers  a haunting vision of a world threatened with nuclear annihilation, following a wealthy Swedish family celebrating the birthday of their patriarch Alexander (Bergman star Erland Josephson), news of the outbreak of World War III reaches their remote Baltic island, and the happy mood turns to horror. And Alexander considers a Faustian bargain to ease his family’s pain. Shot by the great Sven Nykvist, the film shifts into a palette of greys washing over bleak landscapes.
