The History of Women in Art will begin with discussions about the little-known history of professional women artists who began to emerge in the Renaissance and Baroque era?women such as Sofonisba Anghissola, Lavinia Fontana, Caterina van Hemessen, and Artemisia Gentileschi. The class presentations will continue following the rise to prominence in the 18th century of artists like Elizabeth VigÄe Lebrun, acclaimed court painter to Marie Antoinette, and one of the most successful artists of her generation. In the 19th century, artists such as Rosa Bonheur, Harriet Hosmer, Mary Cassatt, and Berthe Morisot continued the trend of professional artists who managed to have international art careers. The remaining classes will focus on women artists whose 20th century visions have significantly helped to shape the art of our own modern era: Suzanne Valadon, Gwen John, Romaine Brooks, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Agnes Pelton from the first half of the century, to the cutting edges of contemporary artists like Jenny Holzer, Louise Bourgeois, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, and Shirin Neshat.
