On Thursday, April 24, CCA will present the inaugural program of Pihtya, a monthly series of spoken-word and mixed-media performances. Headlining this first evening will be Leah “Whisper” Carpenter-Kish and Oscar Hokeah.
Leah “Whisper” Carpenter-Kish (Diné) is a young scholar, poet, and community organizer who lives and works in Albuquerque. A graduate of Fort Lewis College, she is currently a graduate student at the University of New Mexico. Intensely lyrical, Carpenter-Kish's work speaks to the dynamic, evolving, and creative-intellectual vitality present in a thorough and conscientious representation of Native culture and all peoples. Her voice is an evocation of the survival-motives of 21st century Native peoples, especially Native women and children, and young people from every culture and experience.
Oscar Hokeah (Kiowa/Cherokee) was born and raised in Oklahoma. He has articles in the 2008 Spring Issues of Yellow Medicine Review and Red Ink Magazine. He has just completed his first novel (and in search of a publisher) and is steadily working on his next. He is in the BFA program for Creative Writing at the Institute of American Indian Arts.
Following these dynamic performances will be an “Open Mic” session for the community-at-large. The audience is encouraged to participate. And if time permits, the evening will conclude with a brief Artists & Audience in Conversation. |
