..................................................

Martin Back – Digital Media Arts Coordinator
Martin Back is a media manipulator and musician living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Through video and sound he explores the aesthetics of noise, fracture, and appropriation in both live performance and presentation media. The content of his video works range from manipulations of noisy vocal and body performances, landscape ruminations, found footage, and image-to-sound/sound-to-image processing. Martin studied for a B.A. in Moving Image Arts at the College of Santa Fe, where he was a student of noted media artist David Stout and media theorist and historian Gene Youngblood. He is also a protégé of Steina and Woody Vasulka, who bequeathed to him not only knowledge in the area of video art, but also in the areas of cooking, fine wine and relationships. His work has been exhibited in festivals in the United States and Canada. In 2006 he was guest artist at the HyperAction show at the College of Santa Fe and has performed live video actions at the High Mayhem Festival for Emerging Arts (also in Santa Fe). Martin plays drums for the operatic, psychedelic, doom-metal band Gnossurrus. Martin Back grew up in southern Louisiana, which instilled in him a lifelong desire to eat fried shrimp in great quantities whenever possible.

DMA Summer ’08

We’ve had an exciting Spring season at CCA and in the Digital Media Arts Department! In order to better serve the needs of the community we have designed a new class, How to Use Your Macintosh, that has already been offered in April and May. It will be offered again in July, so if you’ve had troubles with that Macintosh, or are sick and tired of your PC, sign up! The earlier the better, as this class is selling out.

Our summer schedule is action-packed: three months worth of classes for both teens and adults. For teens we are offering everything from the basics of video production to documentary production and everything in between. We’re branching out into some interesting territory with two new classes, Experimental Video Production, and Electronic Music Composition.

Adult classes will be offered in using Photoshop, web design, and Macintosh use. In August we’ve programmed two classes aimed at the artistically audacious student: Do it Yourself Electronics for Artists and VideoDelic Improvisation. Don’t miss this opportunity to take your art into new media.

Our performance series Oscillate/Osculate, which happens monthly in the Digital Media Arts’ Moving Image Lab, presents a great lineup of music and performance this summer. In May, Dan Monceaux is trekking to CCA from Australia for a performance of his multi-media extravaganza, Supermarket. June will see local groups AudioBuddha and the Unborn Soul perform for AudioBuddha’s CD release. In July, Raven Chacon is going to give what will be undoubtedly an exciting, dare I say, historic-for-CCA performance. The day after his performance he will conduct two workshops on group improvisation for musicians, which involves systems he has developed in order to conduct musical groups, and the Cobra system, developed by impossible-to-categorize composer John Zorn, which gives directions to players by way of a system of cue cards. In August, local world music ensemble Medjool will enchant us with a mesmerizing and beautiful performance, for which we might eschew chairs and all sit on pillows on the floor.

PROGRAM MISSION
As practitioners of a contemporary digital media literacy, our programs approach new media technologies, and the manner in which various cultures utilize them, with a strength for teaching hands-on production, and a sense of curiosity informed by media analysis and active viewing techniques. Our model of digital media education adapts aspects of film and art school practices within our community program, to cultivate skills for critical reflection, essential for an informed audience of media makers and watchers. We work with adults, teens, educators and community partners.

ABOUT OUR CLASSES
Our classes range in content and experience level.  We offer diverse educational experiences that explore music composition; working with found footage, experimental techniques of video art making, animation, photography, analog electronics, and more basic Macintosh and software tutorials.

EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE
The digital labs are equipped with iMac workstations. We own several 3-CCD Mini-DV camcorders, and in our classes, some of the software commonly employed is  Final Cut Pro,  iStopMotion, Numerology, Max/Msp, and Photoshop.
