Coriolanus
“A tightly plotted action thriller … the questions it poses are so timeless and urgent they could be pull quotes from today’s op-ed page.” –Salon
In his stunning directorial debut, Ralph Fiennes plays a revered and feared Roman general at odds with the city of Rome. Scornful of the masses, pushed by his controlling mother (Vanessa Redgrave), he seeds violence that leads to his banishment. But Corialanus has plans to return, making a pact with a sworn enemy (Gerard Butler). Fiennes transmutes Shakespeare’s neglected work into a masterful, timely exploration of rage, betrayal and mischief in the political realm. (England, 2011, 122 min., 35mm, The Weinstein Company)

Shame
"A mesmerizing companion piece to his 2008 debut, "Hunger," this more approachable but equally uncompromising drama likewise fixes its gaze on the uses and abuses of the human body, as Michael Fassbender again strips himself down, in every way an actor can, for McQueen's rigorous but humane interrogation." –Variety
Steve McQueen's film—a critical favorite and multiple award winner—follows Brandon (Michael Fassbender), a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment, Brandon must deal with memories of their shared painful past, and his insular life spirals out of control. My Week With Marilyn
"A warm, wonderful and enchanting work of artistry ... What an extraordinary thrill to leave a movie exhilarated instead of drained, sated instead of empty, rejuvenated instead of depressed. It's a magical experience." –Rex Reed, NY Observer
In the early summer of 1956, a 23 year-old Oxford grad, determined to make his way in the film business, works as a lowly assistant on a movie set ... the film that united Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) and Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams), who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Aurthur Miller (Dougray Scott). Nearly 40 years on, his diary account of one week, while Miller was away, becomes a story about a Hollywood starlet desperate to escape the pressures of celebrity and discover new kinds of adventure in her life. (U.K., 2011, 99m, 35mm, The Weinstein Company)

Crazy Horse
From mental institutions to ballets to boxing gyms, Frederick Wiseman excels in revealing the mechanics of our institutions. This refreshingly positive portrait of Paris’s glamorous Crazy Horse Cabaret—“the best chic nude show on earth”—captures the directors, dancers, costume designers, wig-makers, lighting technicians, and even the janitors. Using mesmerizing visual spectacle (silhouettes, chiaroscuro, and blocks of color) Wiseman recontexualizes the dancers’ exquisite bodies in surprising and beautiful ways. CRAZY HORSE begins with shadows on stage (an allusion to the magic lantern, one of cinema’s precursors) and ultimately celebrates the play of light and movement that is the essence of cinema itself. (U.S., 2011, 134m, mtuckman)
