The work of composer Raven Chacon ranges from quiet and contemplative—at times nearly silent—musicfor classical chamber instruments and ensembles to performances of noise music involving conceptual iconography on instruments devised by Chacon for his own purposes. His works have been performed and exhibited in the US as well as in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand. In addition, Chacon has received commissions from the VERGE Ensemble in Washington DC, the University of Mary Washington, and the ERGO Ensemble of Toronto. Recent projects include performing with the West Coast noise trio KILT, in Albuquerque’s improvisational collective known as Cobra // group, and many other groups in the Southwest.

On Saturday, July 19th, at 8pm, Chacon will perform two noise songs consisting of “singing drum” and other electronics. On Sunday, July 20th, at 3pm Chacon will conduct a two-part workshop, open to all musicians, involving processes he has developed in order to conduct improvising ensembles and utilizing John Zorn’s ‘Cobra,’ a system of conducting using cue cards that give instructions to the players. Musicians bringing electric instruments must bring some means of amplification.
